The Eagle Ford shale is a major source rock for a wide range of oil- and gas-bearing hot spots. Its depth ranges from 2,500 feet to more than 15,000 feet throughout several South Texas counties. There has been much debate as to exactly how much oil and gas is contained in the Eagle Ford shale. According to Pioneer Natural Resources, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that at least 25 billion barrels of oil and natural gas liquids and 150 trillion cubic feet of natural gas lie beneath the Eagle Ford shale's surface.
